STMicroelectronics' New STM32C0 MCUs Lower the Barrier for Embedded Development

STMicroelectronics has expanded its STM32C0 series of microcontrollers (MCUs) with three new products, offering greater design flexibility, increased storage capacity, more interfaces, and CAN FD options to enhance communication capabilities. The new high-cost-performance STM32C0 series product, STM32C051, features up to 64KB of flash memory, making it ideal for applications requiring more storage than the STM32C031 MCU can provide. With up to 48-pin packages, it offers additional interfaces and user I/O channels.

The other two new products, STM32C091 and STM32C092, extend flash memory capacity to 256KB and come in packages with up to 64 pins. Additionally, the STM32C092 includes a CAN FD interface. With an on-chip CAN FD interface, users can reduce BOM costs, simplify hardware design for industrial communication and networking equipment, and take full advantage of the protocol's upgraded flexibility, speed, and payload capacity.

Patrick Aidoune, General Manager of STMicroelectronics' General-Purpose MCU Division, stated: "As a cost-focused product line within the STM32 series, the STM32C0 series provides developers with great design flexibility, featuring on-chip flash memory ranging from 32KB to 256KB and integrating a rich set of peripheral interfaces. Now, the large flash and RAM of STM32C091/C092 allow developers to store both graphical user interface software and main application programs on the microcontroller. By leveraging ST's TouchGFX tool, they can create visually appealing and engaging user experiences while simplifying the development process."

As an entry-level, cost-effective product in the STM32 series, the STM32C0 MCUs include widely used interfaces such as crystal-less USB Full-Speed Device and USART, as well as timers and analog-to-digital converters (ADC). To complement its cost-conscious feature set, this economical design includes an on-chip clock and requires only a single power input, reducing the need for external components such as timers and decoupling capacitors. This not only lowers the BOM cost but also enables a smaller and simpler PCB design.

The STM32C0 series MCUs offer developers additional benefits, including ST's long-term product longevity program, ensuring continuous chip availability throughout an industrial project's lifecycle. As part of the high-quality STM32 product family, the STM32C0 MCUs facilitate product-level certification, such as IEC 61508 functional safety certification. While both the STM32C0 and STM32G0 series are based on the Arm® Cortex®-M0+ core, the STM32G0 series offers higher performance and more advanced features. These two STM32 MCU series share many commonalities, including package styles, pin arrangements, and peripheral IP modules, allowing for easy interchangeability in application designs.
