SEMI: silicon wafer shipment area declines 7% in 2019, revenue stabilizes $ 11 billion

According to DIGITIMES report, according to the International Semiconductor Industry Association (SEMI) statistics, the global silicon wafer shipment area in 2019 fell from the highest point, down 7% year-on-year, but the overall revenue remains at more than 11 billion US dollars.

In the middle of last year, SEMI issued a report saying that due to the pressure of inventory adjustment in the semiconductor industry, the industrial market is cold, and silicon wafer fabs are not operating well. It is expected that the area of silicon wafer shipments in 2019 will decline from the historical high in 2018. 6.3%. At present, it seems that the actual total shipment area of silicon wafers in 2019 still fails to meet the expectations of half a year ago.

Specifically, in 2018, the global silicon wafer shipment area reached 12.732 billion square inches, a record high, but this number fell to 11.81 billion square inches in 2019. The revenue of semiconductor silicon wafers also slipped from US $ 11.38 billion in 2018 to US $ 11.15 billion in 2019, a decrease of about 2% year-on-year, and the performance was relatively stable.

In this regard, Neil Weaver, vice president of SEMI SMG, analyzed that the decline in global semiconductor silicon shipments in 2019 is due to the weak memory market and inventory adjustments. Despite the decline in output, revenues remain resilient. According to SEMI analysis, silicon wafer production will regain its growth momentum this year and rewrite the record high in 2022.
