Global smartphone shipments drop for four consecutive seasons! IDC: The main reason comes from the Chinese market

According to a report by data agency IDC, global smartphone shipments in the second quarter of 2022 fell by 8.7% year-on-year, and shipments in the quarter fell to 286 million units, a decrease of 3.5% than expected. This is the fourth consecutive quarter of decline in global smartphone shipments.

Similarly, Canalys reported on August 1 that global smartphone shipments in the second quarter of 2022 were the quarterly lowest point after the second quarter of 2020.

Nabila Popal, global research director at IDC, said OEMs have cut orders for the second half of the year, with Chinese suppliers making the biggest cuts. It is expected that demand in some regions will start to pick up by the end of the year, but the forecast for smartphone market shipments in 2022 is bound to be lowered. IDC believes that the current decline in various data is not the disappearance of demand, but has been brought forward.

From a regional perspective, the most visible part of the decline in Q2 2022 is Central and Eastern Europe. Ukrainian shipments fell 36.5% year-on-year in the second quarter due to the ongoing impact of the Russian-Ukrainian war. In terms of volume, the decline in global smartphone shipments mainly came from China, where shipments in the second quarter fell by 14.3% year-on-year.

Despite the downward revision in industry sentiment, the ranking of suppliers in the second quarter of 2022 has not changed much. Samsung is firmly in first place with a market share of 21.8%, Apple is second with a market share of 15.6%, and Xiaomi is third with a market share of 13.8%, narrowing the gap.
