Following Samsung/LGD/Panasonic, Mitsubishi Electric announced that it will withdraw from the LCD panel market

LCD panel price competition has intensified. After Samsung, Panasonic and other manufacturers, another company can't hold it. Mitsubishi Electric of Japan announced that it will withdraw from LCD panel production.

Mitsubishi Electric issued a press release on June 15 to announce that its subsidiary MelcoDisplayTechnologyInc. (MDTI) will end the production of TFT LCD modules (panels) in June 2022 and exit the LCD business.

Mitsubishi Electric pointed out that MDTI is currently mainly engaged in the R&D, manufacturing and sales of small and medium-sized LCD panels for industrial/vehicle use. However, due to the intensified price competition with overseas manufacturers such as China, it is not expected to make money, and it is difficult to continue to maintain product competitiveness. , So decided to end production and withdraw from the LCD business.

According to Japanese media reports, Mitsubishi Electric began mass production of LCD panels in 1996. The LCD business (excluding LCD TVs) planned to quit this year will generate approximately 28.5 billion yen in revenue in 2019. Mitsubishi Electric currently purchases LCD panels for TVs from external companies, and after discontinuing production of the above-mentioned small and medium-sized LCD panels, the small and medium-sized panels required for its own products will also be purchased from external companies.

After Mitsubishi Electric withdrew from LCD panel production, Japan's major LCD panel manufacturers left Sharp, Japan Display Inc (JDI) and Kyocera (Kyocera).

Panasonic announced on November 21, 2019 that it will stop producing LCD panels. The main reason for the fierce competition is that it does not make money, so it is difficult to continue the research. Panasonic Liquid Crystal Display (PLD), a subsidiary of Panasonic responsible for LCD panel production, will end LCD panel production in 2021.

Reuters reported at the end of March that Samsung Display, a panel manufacturer under Samsung Electronics, decided that the production of LCD panels in South Korea and China would be fully completed by the end of the year. A Samsung Display spokesperson said on March 31 that the LCDs ordered by customers will be available until the end of this year.

Another Korean factory, LGDisplay (LGD), said earlier this year that it would stop producing LCD TV panels in South Korea by the end of this year.
